Lactose is a disaccharide sugar composed of galactose and glucose, with the molecular formula C12H22O11. It makes up around 2–8% of milk by mass and is named from the Latin word for milk, lac, combined with the suffix -ose used for sugars. Lactose is a white, water-soluble, non-hygroscopic solid with a mildly sweet taste, used in the food and pharmaceutical industries.
